Kenya is an undiscovered whitewater paddling diamond in the rough. Warm water, incredible pool drop rivers, no other paddlers for a thousand kilometres, spectacular game viewing, fresh fruit on the river banks......what more could you ask for?

This trip takes in the best runs on Kenyas central plateau, along with the wild and scenic Samburu Game Reserve.

Small group sizes, world class instruction, up close and personal game viewing come together to create a paddling trip with more.

Prequisites:

  • Moderate level of fitness
  • Confident Class II+/III+ paddling ability, with a solid roll
  • Desire to explore some of Kenya's less visited areas
  • Sense of adventure

Notes:

  • Many people add on a few days at the coast or a climb up Mt Kenya to this trip, we can help arrange that for you.
  • Trip Includes all in country meals, accommodation, transport, instruction and park fees
  • International airfare NOT INCLUDED
  • This trip can be arranged as a private departure anytime for groups of 2 or more.
  • We can arrange private trips of varying difficulty and can accomodate non-paddlers in groups also

Basic Itinerary:

  • Day 1:
    Arrive in Nairobi early in the morning.
    Transfer to our river base at Sagana for a free afternoon.

  • Day 2:
    Kayaking on the Tana River
    We will spend today on the Upper (Dogs Back), section of the Tana, and today will be a skill development day on a short, fun section of river.  There are also 3 x 10 - 15 foot drops at the put in, if the crew are into it, we will do a boof training session there in the afternoon. (b, l, d)

  • Day 3:
    Kayaking on the Tana River 
    Another quick blast down the Dogs Back section in the morning before we load up the vehicle and head downstream and put in below the 'Big 3' rapids (which we will look at running later in the trip). Our afternoon run will be a further skill development session, all preparing us for more rivers to come.   • Day 4:
    Kayaking the Ragati River (levels permitting)
    This is such a cool run, wild guavas growing on the banks, inquisitive locals, beautiful scenery and some super fun low volume whitewater.  This run suits everyone as it is easy to walk the big features and the in between stuff is super cruisy and fun. (b, l, d)

  • Day 5 - 7:
    Game Safari in Samburu National Park 
    We will leave early on day 5 and drive the 4 hours around Mt Kenya to Samburu National Game Reserve. These days will be spent doing game drives and checking out the African wildlife.  There are the options to stay in beautiful game lodges or to camp out. On day 7 we will return to Sagana.   • Day 8:
    Kayaking the Tana River
    Back on the river again, today we will do a top to bottom run on the Tana River, today we will take the time to scout and perhaps run some (or all) of the Big 3 rapids. (b, l, d)

  • Day 9:
    Kayaking the North Mathioya
    A bit of a road trip today, we will take the 2 hour drive into the Abadares Mountains and run the classic continuous Class III North Mathioya.  This (when levels permit) is one classy run, 14 kilometers of class III paddling with barely a pool on it......so good. (b, l, d)

  • Day 10:
    Choose your own Run
    Our final full day of paddling, we will either pick a new run (water levels and energy levels permitting), or head back to an old favorite. (b, l)

  • Day 11:
    Half Day Paddling, Return to Nairobi
    We will do a quick morning blast down the whitewater section of the Tana, perhaps ticking off some rapids we have yet to do, we wil also take our last look at the ever impressive Mission waterfall.  After packing up, we will head back to Nairobi for a farewell dinner, before flying out late in the evening.
