Kenya Camel Trek, Safari and Rafting Expedition

Explore Kenya by foot, camel, raft and safari vehicle. This unique, active itinerary combines the traditional travel style of camel train, exhilarating whitewater rafting and some of the worlds best game viewing into one exciting itinerary. On this trip you will see the world famous Laikipia Plateau, visit the spectacular Samburu National Park and navigate the Tana and Mathioya Rivers by whitewater raft.

Basic Itinerary:

  • Day 1:
    Arrive in Nairobi early in the morning, transfer to our river base at Sagana for a free afternoon. (l, d)

  • Day 2:
    After breakfast we will get all set up with gear and a safety talk before heading upstream to raft the Tana River.  the day will be filled with many exciting rapids and beautiful scenery.  This section of river is graded III/IV+ and includes technical rapids, big water drops (water level dependant) warm water, wildlife, inquisitive locals and is a world class rafting experience. After rafting we will have some time to relax by the pool before taking a sundowner walk in the surrounding foothills. (b, l, d)

  • Day 3:
    Around 8am we will leave Sagana and head north west around Mt Kenya to Nanyuki, once we get there we will head inland towards the Laikipia Plateau to the beginning of our camel trek at Nayasura Camp.  We will do a short hike in the afternoon before enjoying the camp for the night. (b, l, d)

  • Day 4:
    We will start our trek early in the morning to maximise the game that we will see (animals are most active in the early morning).  We will arrive at camp in the early afternoon, where we will spend time enjoying camp, before taking a later evening hike. (b, l, d)

  • Day 5:
    Today we will be heading down toward the Ewaso Nyiro River, which runs along the eastern edge of the Laikipia Plateau and then turns eastward toward Samburu National Reserve. Along the way we will be looking for Eland, Steinbuck, Giraffe, Waterbuck, Grevy’s Zebra as well as all the tough-to-see predators such as Wild Dog, Hyena, Lion, Leopard or Cheetah. We will also be looking from high open points for Elephants. When we arrive at the Ewaso Nyiro we may want to take a quick swim before lunch. After lunch, our rest and sundowners on a high rocky hillside we will return to our camp on the river for dinner and a toast to our adventure. (b, l, d)

  • Day 6:
    We will transfer back to Nanyuki in the morning where we will meet our safari vehicle and from there we will head further north through Isiolo to Samburu National Park.  We will arrive at our lodge accommodations in the early afternoon where we will have lunch before relaxing for a few hours.  Around 4:30pm we'll head out for a sundown game drive.(b, l, d)

  • Day 7:
    Today will be spent taking up to 3 game drives (sunrise, lunchtime, sunset), and hanging out at the lodge, enjoying the food, pool and relaxing time. (b, l, d)

  • Day 8:
    After an early morning game drive we will have breakfast, before packing up and heading back towards Sagana via Nanyuki.  Along the way we will stop at the very cool Trout Tree restaurant for lunch.  We will be back at Sagana in the mid/late afternoon. (b, l, d)

  • Day 9:
    If you thought the trip so far had been adventurous.....today (water level permitting) we step it up just a notch when we go and raft the Mathioya River.  This is a continuous, technical Class IV raft run and requires a good team effort to get down with clean lines. If river levels aren't cooperating we will do the whitewater section of the Tana River again.  After lunch we will head back to Nairobi where we will settle into our hotel accommodation for the night.  Later on in the evening we will head out to the epic Fago Gaucho restaurant for a farewell dinner.   • Day 10:
    Today is a self directed day to explore the markets, museum etc in Nairobi.  You will be picked up and transferred to the airport for your evening flight home. (b)
