North Island Highlights - Raft - Sea Kayak - Hike

Join us on a 'best of the best' tour of New Zealands North Island. A multi day sea kayak journey, an overnight rafting trip on the spectacular Tongariro River and hiking in the volcanoes of the central north island, this trip covers it all.
You would be hard pressed to find a trip that takes you to more beautiful, wild and remote places than this one.

Basic Itinerary:

  • Day 1:
    Arrive Auckland, New Zealand
    Upon your arrival at the Auckland International Airport you will be met by your Adventure Trippin Travel Guide and transferred to your accommodations. The afternoon will be yours to relax or do some exploring before meeting with the group for a welcome dinner (not included).

  • Day 2:
    Overnight Rafting Trip on the Tongariro River
    After a reasonably early breakfast we will depart Auckland and take the 4 hour drive to Turangi on the southern shores of Lake Taupo. Upon arrival we will drop our gear off at our river base before heading up to the Tongariro River for our overnight rafting trip.
    Today will see us navigate 30 or so Class III rapids in a beautiful remote setting, before setting up camp on a riverside beach for the night.

  • Day 3:
    Tongariro River Rafting Day 2
    After a great cooked breakfast, we will pack up camp before continuing downstream through another 30 + Class III rapids before reaching our takeout. We will then head back to our river base to pack up and clean gear before heading to the Tokaanu hot springs for a Puia (traditional Maori meal, meat and veggies steamed underground) and a soak in the thermal pools. We will spend the evening gathering supplies and packing for the next part of our trip, a hike up Mt Ngaruhoe.

  • Day 4:
    Mt Ngaruhoe/Mt Tongariro Climb
    We will be up at 5am this morning and on the road by 6am at the latest. This will get us to the Mangatepopo trail head before any of the large group buses, as we are on a different program than them. Today our goal is to summit two of the three central north island volcanoes, Mt Ngaruhoe and Mt Tongariro. This will be a challenging day, covering a lot of ground, though the views alone are worth the effort.

  • Day 5:
    Driving Day to Paihia
    Today is a travel day, we will head north through Taupo (stopping at Huka Falls) then on through Rotorua and onwards to Auckland then up to Paihia in the Bay of Islands. It will be a long day of driving though it is through some beautiful countryside and we will break it up with as many stops as people require.

  • Day 6:
    Sea Kayaking – Bay of Islands – Day 1
    After breakfast we will have a bit of time to gather snacks and supplies for our awesome sea kayak journey ahead. Around mid morning we will load up the van with the kayaks and gear, and head off to our launch point (this will be determined by current weather conditions)

  • Day 7 - 10:
    Sea Kayaking Journey
    These days will be spent journeying along, around and through the Bay of Islands Marine Reserve. Some days will be filled with kayak surfing, rock gardening and deep water rescue practise. Others will be spent snorkelling, and exploring the towering volcanic formations along this spectacular stretch of coastline. The food will be plentiful and of great quality, and you will learn about the rich history and culture of the area.
    In the evenings we will run Eskimo rolling sessions and throughout the duration of the trip we will constantly be teaching you new skills to add to your sea kayaking repertoire

  • Day 11:
    Final Day of Sea Kayak Journey
    We will return to the vehicle utterly exhausted and super stoked on the amazing trip you have just completed. After packing up our gear and boats we will head back to Paihia, check into our accommodations before heading out for dinner and a few drinks. Chances are you will sleep well tonight…….

  • Day 12:
    Return to Auckland
    After breakfast we will load up the trusty van and take the drive back to Auckland. Upon arrival we will check into our hotel before heading out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

    Departure Day
    Those heading straight home will be transferred to the airport 3 hours prior to their flight home.
